Students enrolled in our Pre-K after-school program or extended day schedule can continue their day at our school. Age-appropriate activities are offered to children, divided into groups according to their age.
Creative activities: Kids will find themselves involved in fine motor activities like painting, sketching, or Play-Doh, constructing using tools like blocks or Legos and solving puzzles to develop their cognitive abilities. Our teachers occasionally employ tools like worksheets, rhymes, and songs to reinforce the children’s understanding of the subject matter being covered in class.
Outdoor Activities: Our after-school children then engage in a gross motor activity! This may involve going to the nearby, sizable outdoor playground. Children can play on our playground and work out their muscles by climbing, running, or kicking a ball. Students will participate in intense motor exercises indoors if the weather prevents outdoor play.
Literacy Development: Afterward, teachers will have read-aloud and music with fingerplays. Each student will have a chance to ask questions regarding the books the teacher is reading as the teacher reads. Reading aloud and listening to music helps your child's cognitive and language development. In their library centers, students will also enjoy independent reading time. With their peers, your child will participate completely in educational activities. It will soon be time for you to pick up your child after all this excitement!
STREAM
Students enrolled in our Pre-K after-school program or extended day schedule can choose STREAM as a daily afternoon activity. Many of us may have heard of the STREAM program; this new program adds the R, making it STREAM! STREAM stands for Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math.
Under STREAM, students will engage in activities that require them to ask critical questions, uncover answers, apply what they learn, and problem-solve creatively. They must also collaborate with peers for teamwork and discussions in which students exchange ideas and explore problem-solving strategies. In addition, children are encouraged to discover new vocabulary terms and to participate in books, music, and activities that promote them to become young readers!
Language: Arabic and French
Students enrolled in our Pre-K after-school program or extended day schedule can choose either Arabic or French as their new language. A fluent-speaking language teacher will teach lessons, introduce music in that language and have the children create art! Research suggests that learning a second language boosts listening skills, improving memory, concentration, and the ability to multitask. Children who learn another language before age five will utilize the same part of the brain to acquire that second language.
Contrary to popular belief, young children are not confused by the introduction of multiple languages simultaneously. Not only do they naturally navigate multilingual environments, but acquiring a second language early in life primes the brain to learn numerous other languages, opening a world of opportunities. Children proficient in other languages also show enhanced creativity and mental flexibility.
GIFTED AND TALENTED
Our Gifted and Talented Preparation Program is offered as a daily after-school activity for our current Pre-K students. G&T programs are one way New York City schools meet the needs of exceptional students. Pre- K students can take a test to see if they qualify for a Gifted and Talented Program at their future school.
The G&T test uses two assessments to determine if a child is eligible to apply for a G&T program. It evaluates children in nonverbal and verbal tests providing a balanced look at each child’s intellectual abilities.
The nonverbal G&T assessment measures reasoning skills without the use of spoken language. Children perform tasks such as completing patterns, sequencing, and connecting ideas to demonstrate an understanding of relationships and an ability to solve problems.
The verbal G&T assessment measures reasoning and comprehension skills that require children to pay close attention and listen carefully to oral instructions. The assessment includes detecting likenesses and differences, recalling words and numbers, defining terms, following directions, establishing sequence, and solving arithmetic problems.
There is no harm in having your child tested. At Wisdom Tree Preschool, we provide practice tests similar to the test your child may take. In addition, children are given activities to help them prepare for their fun and practical tests!
